Outsider

Laying on my bed, wrapped in comfortable quilt, I was watching “On Purpose” by Jay Shetty.

The guest of this particular episode was Khloe Kardashian, I had very low expectations of learning something deep from this episode.

But, surprisingly I did.

Talking about the power of small gestures, she said “Instead of just being rude to people in service industry, you should give them the respect they deserve. You don’t want to be invisible. You don’t want people to look past you. You want people to look at you…”

It was an eye opening moment for me.

How often we forget to acknowledge people. Specially the ones who work for us. We somehow feel entitled to be rude to them.

Not only that, we unknowingly make some people feel as if they don’t belong with us.

It can be as small as not offering someone a bite from what you are having.

I have faced the wrath of being outsider first in hand and hence I can empathize with the people who are treated as outsiders.

Coming from an inclusive family, it stings to be excluded by a group of people.

Whenever a new person joins in the place I am at, I try to be extra nice and welcoming to them so that they don’t have to go through the same thing as I do.

It doesn’t cost a penny to be a kind person. And, this reminder came from a person I wasn’t expecting from.

And, I am not saying world is full of unkind people. World is full of forgetful people who are kind at the core but forget to show it in their actions.

The kind people are among us but generally in a group dynamic they forget their superpower of making others feel comfortable.
